ACADEMICS: Here is a slightly longer look at my academic background, areas of interest, and thoughts on teaching.
As a doctoral student studying modern Europe, my interests are the built environment and what meanings and memories are alive and transferred through their existence. I find it fascinating that buildings can hold meaning and symbols which change and can be rewritten over time, often giving rise to a sense of identity within a group of people, culture, or nation. I focus on sites of contested space and narrative, especially places in the urban environment that were sites of struggle and rebellion and of people working to gain their freedom or independence from an oppressive group. Countries of interest are Ireland, Germany, Poland, and Italy particularly during the World War I and World War II eras.
